Counselling and Psychotherapy with Dee Russell

I’m a BACP-registered Relational Integrative counsellor/psychotherapist, meaning my approach draws on several therapy traditions and adapts to individual clients, with a focus on how we relate to one another (and to ourselves). My background is in academia, but my passion lies in psychotherapy’s capacity to heal and to transform.

You may be struggling with things that have happened to you (in the past or recently), or perhaps you’re feeling stuck, lost or overwhelmed; whatever you bring, I will listen with kindness and respect, and will sensitively support you to express feelings, explore experiences and make changes. I will work collaboratively and flexibly to ensure therapy responds to what you want and need.

I’m trained and experienced in working with trauma (particularly sexual violence and childhood abuse): I use an evidence-based ‘phased’ approach to trauma recovery, which begins by establishing and increasing a sense of safety and stability (within the therapy room and in life outside) before safely processing traumatic experiences using a variety of techniques (which may or may not involve directly revisiting memories, depending on what the client feels they need).

Therapy can be especially helpful when longstanding ways of feeling, thinking, acting or relating (which may have helped us cope or served us well in the past) seem to be causing problems. If this is the case, I can help you to reflect on and gently challenge these patterns. I encourage the development of kindness towards yourself as you undertake this work, and I will offer compassion to all aspects of you, including any parts that you may find difficult to accept in yourself.

While psychotherapy usually focuses on internal processes and immediate relationships, I’m sensitive to, and able to explore, how larger forces (such as oppression and inequality) shape our lives. I’ve worked with clients from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds, am anti-racist and an LGBTQI+ ally. Alongside private practice, I provide short-term, low-cost counselling at a local community charity and I volunteer at a charity for survivors of sexual violence.
